Bitcasa no longer free

  last edited: Fri, 08 Apr 2016 08:30:36 +0200
#Bitcasa is dead. #ownCloud #GoogleDrive / #Gdrive and #Dropbox are still kings.

Well, right from the beginning, their Infinite Storage tagline was already very doubtful. Then it was when it was pulled out.

Today, not even the limited free accounts survived. All free accounts, even their partners' promotions, were switched to a 60-day free trial account.

The only strength left for Bitcasa is their encryption. But if you know how to store encrypted files, then that becomes moot. Besides, I do not know if they can still be trusted after these two downgrades.

Yes, freeloaders are freeloaders. But they made a promise of Infinite Storage. They made a promise of free accounts even though limited. Now, they are going to expire all after the trial period and delete your files permanently..

Sure, there were probably people using Bitcasa as a storage for illegal stuff. Since it is encrypted, there is no way for them to delete these. They can only wonder what those huge files are. If they knew what those are exactly, then it begs the question, how?

Yes, Dropbox is not ideal. After all they admitted they do have access to our files and look into it to check for ToS violations. It's even in their website.

Google Drive is, well, Google. They may be strong proponents of freedom, anonymity, Privacy, FLOSS/FOSS, and security, but their loophole is their State. The laws of their nation. The Legal.

Owncloud on the other hand is the only option left. But it is not for non-techies nor the poor. I can setup my own ownCloud but I'm not rich. I'd rather use a cloud service that I'm sure will last longer than if I setup my own.

Which brings us back to Bitcasa. Why would I pay them if these two downgrades can be taken as a sign that they might fold later? They are obviously cleaning house. They need space. They need to make money to justify their team and operational costs.

What's preventing them to call it quits? If they are Google, Dropbox, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, SugarSync, then maybe we can trust them.

At the end of the day, it's all about service lifespan, trust, and encryption. These three will determine if you will pay Bitcasa, if not, which service are you going to return to.

I like the idea behind #Kontalk. It's a phone number based #XMPP network that is true to the protocol's spirit β€” decentralised, #FLOSS, and federated.

The only gripe I have is that their end-to-end encryption is not compatible with OTA nor SecureIM. The Kontalk user has to manually turn-off the app's encryption to send a message to a non-Kontalk XMPP account.

Two things it need to improve on:
  • Make encryption compatible, at least with OTA.
  • Ability to turn-off encryption on the contact level, instead of turning it on and off at the app level

Other than those, it's a promising product that can compete head-on with #WhatsApp.

Or even better use omemo (axolotl) instead of otr...
πŸ‡΅πŸ‡πŸ“· YUKI πŸ•ΉπŸ“β›„

I searched "axolotl" and I got a salamander! Haha, what happened to Google's profiling. :D

---

After reading the Wikipedia entry, yep, better to use omemo.

It's also very interesting. Axolotl was developed by Whisper System for TextSecure? Is it possible then that Signal and the end-to-end encryption Whisper implemented in WhatsApp is Axolotl or Omemo?

I'm currently using ChatSecure+Orbot, and end-to-end encryption is highly dependent on the contact's XMPP client and plugins. :(

I hope Omemo gets approved as a XEP so everybody else will have more reason to implement it.

Thanks for sharing!

You can also try conversations... It supports omemo and otr btw gajim also has an omemo plugin allthough this is experimental...

Secure Messaging Scorecard

  last edited: Wed, 06 Apr 2016 14:03:07 +0200
Which apps and tools actually keep your messages safe?

In the face of widespread Internet surveillance, we need a secure and practical means of talking to each other from our phones and computers. Many companies offer β€œsecure messaging” productsβ€”but are these systems actually secure? We decided to find out, in the first phase of a new EFF Campaign for Secure & Usable Crypto.

This scorecard represents only the first phase of the campaign. In later phases, we are planning to offer closer examinations of the usability and security of the tools that score the highest here. As such, the results in the scorecard below should not be read as endorsements of individual tools or guarantees of their security; they are merely indications that the projects are on the right track. For practical advice and tutorials on how to protect your online communication against surveillance, check out EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense guide.

WhatsApp's Signal Protocol integration is now complete

  last edited: Wed, 06 Apr 2016 14:04:17 +0200
At Open Whisper Systems, our goal is to make private communication simple. A year ago, we announced a partnership with WhatsApp and committed to integrating the Signal Protocol into their product, moving towards full end to end encryption for all of their users by default.

Over the past year, we've been progressively rolling out Signal Protocol support for all WhatsApp communication across all WhatsApp clients. This includes chats, group chats, attachments, voice notes, and voice calls across Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, Nokia S40, Nokia S60, Blackberry, and BB10.

As of today, the integration is fully complete. Users running the most recent versions of WhatsApp on any platform now get full end to end encryption for every message they send and every WhatsApp call they make when communicating with each other. This includes all the benefits of the Signal Protocol -- a modern, open source, forward secure, strong encryption protocol for asynchronous messaging systems, designed to make end-to-end encrypted messaging as seamless as possible.

What is the API URL of Hubzilla? I tried base/api/ base/settings/api base/oauth/ and base/settings/oauth/ but none worked.

This is for #Twidere. The key and secret are correct, so I'm thinking it's the API URL since I'm only guessing. (It was not shown after adding an application in Hubzilla.)

JobStreet's Competitor in the Philippines is going bye-bye soon

  last edited: Sun, 03 Apr 2016 14:17:25 +0200
This new jobsite in the #Philippines will disappear soon. They have developers who does not know what they are doing.

  • They use a "loader" screen. That's obsolete.
  • If the site failed to load, the "loader" screen is stuck.
  • If your account is tied to Facebook, you will never be able to login ever again because it is looping!
    • This email address is associated with a Facebook account, please use Facebook to login.
    • The email address of this Facebook account was linked to a regular account, please login using your email and password.

Whoever is creating their website, probably in-house, is doing a very poor job. It is also amazing that they do not have any quality control team or test team. For a company funded by investors and whose main objective is to do business… well, /facepalm

I am interest in see what we need to do and how we go to organizate teams for work all together and advance fast.

Autism Spectrum Awareness Month

April is the #Autism Spectrum awareness month. It seven (7) years ago, on a #Friendica instance, that someone suggested that I might be one, an #aspie or someone born with #Asperger Syndrome. Out-of-curiosity, I did my due diligence and found that I could be one.

Like any person who have been in the Internet since the late 90s, I was careful with what I was reading online. Though we joke about "Doctor Google", the fact remains Google is not a doctor at all (nor any website for that matter). I did my own tests and observations, primary to myself.

Fortunately (maybe to you it was 'unfortunately'), it turned out right. I had questions, struggles, experiences, and observations before and after that were answered and made sense if indeed I am an aspie (or #autistic if you prefer it).

For example, during my teenage years, I used to sway myself when waiting for someone. Back then I did not know why I was doing it but it did help in keeping me patient and sane. At some point, 21 or 22 years old, I got conscious about it and I stopped doing it until it was gone. Again, I was not aware of this yet at the time, it was also when I got impatient and angry when I am waiting for people. Back to seven years ago, this was one of my experiment, I let myself loose and just do what my mind and body wants to do, I started doing my body sway. The result? I was no longer impatient nor angry when waiting for someone. I can even smile, say "it's okay, no fuss". It was a relief.

There was also this quirkiness in me when it comes to paths I took. For example, in a mall or office, even parks, the path I took to come to the place will be the same path I will take when I leave the place. I am doing it at times consciously or unconsciously. I had no idea why I was doing it, but it was always a relief to have taken the exact same path I took.

You see, I have this in my mind that I am leaving some line or rope behind whenever I walk (or run). If I fail to take the same path back, it gets entangled and unrecoverable, and this makes me very, very, uneasy and bothered the rest of the day. This was very strong when I was a kid but I was able to have some control over it when I became an adult (or maybe I think I have control).

This was another experiment I did seven years ago. It was when I understood what it was and why I was doing it and why I was feeling bad or good. It was autism.

There were many others, like #PeopleWatching. I am sure we are all familiar with bird watching. But there is also what I call people watching. My oldest memory of me doing people watching was when I was 10 years old. I'll stay in a place where someone disturbing me is almost nil and just observe people.

I had no idea what I was doing and why I was doing it. When people asked me, I tell them "nothing, I just want to look at all these people". For them it was a total waste of time. For me, again, it was relief, a relief I only understood when I became aware of the Autism Spectrum, or more specifically, Asperger Syndrome.

Of course, all these could be just a simple coincidence (and I don't believe in coincidences). I heard a few people say that s/he knows someone who do the same things and s/he is not in the spectrum. But, believe it or not, I have not heard someone tell me that s/he does the same and s/he is not in the spectrum. It was always, every single time, someone they know somewhere who I will never meet nor talk to. I sometimes doubt they do know someone.

Do they know someone who loves to walk around and does not know why they were walking around? (I used to do that when I was kid.) Do they know someone who loves to follow patterns out in the street and get lost in it, to the point they get in danger? I still do that. Do they know someone who talks a lot without noticing his or her audience is no longer interested because s/he dragged it? I do that. I can not interpret social signs, except for happiness, sadness, and pain. In fact, sadness and pain I rarely identify!

Combine all of these few examples I mentioned, I ask then, is that someone they know have most it too?

This is, I believe, signals that one is in the Autism Spectrum, if he is still "functional" as Neurotypical Psychologists label someone, then it is possibly Asperger Syndrome, a sub-type of AS.

And it is hard. It is not easy at all to live in a society dominated by Neurotypicals who are ignorant of us or simply refuse to acknowledge that we do exist. We almost always end up pretending to be a neurotypical, which I unconsciously did and is much harder. So, after I accepted that I am an aspie, everything became easier because now I know that I was trying to fit to a world that is not my own, pretending to be "you" when I am not.

However, it does not mean things are finally easy. Because the world-at-large is still unaware of the Autism Spectrum. They see is as an "abnormality", a "disease" or "sickness" that should be cured, even a curse. AS, for me, is not any of those. There is no cure to AS because it is not a disease or sickness or whatever. Yes, you can theoretically prevent AS if you can rearrange a developing baby's DNA, but after that? No. AS is a life, our life.

We are who we are today because we lived a life as someone in AS, we may not have known it but it was there, a part of us. I for one can not and will never exchange myself being an AS to live and think and be socially "functional" and "acceptable" like you. This is me. I love how my brain works, how I think.

Neurotypicals claim they have empathy and we in the spectrum don't. Well, if you do have empathy, then why is it you are either denying AS exist or you are not educating yourself about AS and us? If that is what empathy is, then we are glad we do not have empathy at all.

A fair note. It was the psychologists and psychiatrists who are telling people that AS don't have empathy. Do not forget, these so-called "experts" are neurotypicals. Let me tell you a secret these "experts" are not telling you, we in the spectrum do have empathy, it is just different how we process and show it.

I hope, this lengthy post, helped shed some light and understanding about us.

TiddlyWiki: a powerful, lightweight, extendable, non-linear web book

While I was searching for an alternative to Litlift, I found TiddlyWiki. #TiddlyWiki is lightweight, non-linear, personal web book, note-taking, and wiki.

But don't dismiss it because it is "lightweight". TiddlyWiki is powerful and extendable. I have not even scratched the surface yet. There are a lot of possibilities or use cases for this little piece of software that I have time to test and play.

So far, I am using it as a repository of ideas slash wiki for a long-term project. Once I'm satisfied with the content, I can upload it and it's done. That's it. No database. One single html file. (Although it's possible to have multiple html files.)

You have to give it a test run to understand it.

You need a Satellite Internet Connection the more cheaper I can see is $25 dollars and is only 4 megas Upload Download I not have idea the speed in Philippines
πŸ‡΅πŸ‡πŸ“· YUKI πŸ•ΉπŸ“β›„

Yep, but sadly, our tropical climate interferes with satellite Internet connections. It was a boom almost 2 decades ago but whenever the rainy season begins (which lasts for 9-10 months), our uplink deteriorates. We had Internet cafés on satellite Internet back then.

Speed here is pretty bad. First, the Philippine Internet backbone is being controlled by a single corporate entity, PLDT. Everybody else leases, even their major competitor Globe Telecoms. Second, PLDT and Globe is a duopoly, which of course they won't admit. They work together, unofficially, to corner the market and keep the government from protecting the consumers.

Right now, the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission, a government agency) released their Internet speed results and it was highly against all the local ISPs. These two largest networks is now threatening to file a case against the NTC, on a separate matter (frequency allotment), after a few days of the announcement. It was like its their ace up their sleeves.

That's how dirty these corporations are playing, and of course, they all call it "democracy" and "capitalism".

Since our country is a National-Bicameral government, things are too slow. Many of us are fighting for a constitutional amendment, to return to a Federal government and ditch Bicameral in favor of Parliamentary. But the politicians and businesses are opposing this grassroots movement because they will have less control and less power.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
United we stand. Divided we fall.
Crab mentality. / I should be at the top of the food chain.

The three motto of a corrupt system.

We don't even have a "Limited Liability Corporation". Since housing and student loans are non-existent here, unlike in the US and EU, they trapped us this way. You either choose to build a full corporation (at least 6 founders), or stick with partnership or sole-proprietorship which doesn't protect your personal assets from the banks. Which these capitalists designed in the first place. So now, they are controlling us, like the Internet speed, it is an uphill battle.

You know, when you are looking for a job, you sometimes really have to disclose your "specialness". In this case, I have to disclose that I'm an aspie ( #AspergerSyndrome ) because a head-hunter contacted me just now and the position being offered is an interesting one -- Customer Service Executive. A managerial position.

Sadly, as much as I want to, phone conversations is the weakness I got from Asperger. Did you know I have to close my eyes just to understand the person talking on the phone? And in a voice-type Customer Service job, this is not something one can do because you are going to read (and type) information from the computer screen.

It's not about not being able to multi-task, although it is true that most in the Autism Spectrum find it hard to multi-task. I can multi-task just fine, as long as there are no voices constantly communicating with me (phone or otherwise).

A good thing about revealing this information to head-hunters is it's easy to decline and you are being honest with them. At the end of the day, honesty can get you far. Who knows, maybe this head-hunter I talked to (via SMS), might recommend me to someone or contact me again if a non-voice job is available. But if I kept that information, they'll just think I'm very picky or whatever, and that is definitely not going to get me anywhere.

Besides, it feels good to be honest. Because you know that they understood and won't think otherwise. Also good for myself because it released what could have become regret later on. Freedom, it feels good, you know.

Planning to Create a How-To Guide

Planning on creating a "How-To" guide on the whats and hows of Hubzilla. This way, when we invite people over, they won't get lost or intimidated -- hopefully.

I already have key topics and an outline. A short introduction to why we are different, then a short run down on the basic features (or settings).

This will be texts only with screenshots. As much as I want to create a screencast, I'm afraid our old netbook is not capable of doing that. Maybe, after I publish these How-To guides, someone can create a screencast version.

For now, let's see. At least from my past Friendica experience with my old hub, the common feedback I heard from friends was it appears complicated and daunting to them. That a guide might have helped. Although they do understand why there is a need to have a privacy-aware and freedom-loving network, some on a deep level like many of us here do, while some on the surface.

If anyone have suggestions, tips, feel free to reply back to this thread.
